The next government must adopt a fresh stance on contracting.
That's according to a leading lobby group, John Brazier, managing director of PCG, the voice of freelancing, claimed that the value offered by self-employed individuals to the economy is rarely appreciated.
As a result, the vital role freelancing has to play in assisting growth must continue to be emphasised, he commented.
Mr Brazier said policy framers have consistently "failed to recognise the value" of the UK's 1.4 million freelancers despite evidence of their contribution.
"Whatever the flavour of future government, they will need to be observant, fleeter of foot, more creative and prepared to effect real and often fundamental change," he added.
Last month, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's director of research Roger Tweedy claimed that business confidence is gradually returning in the UK as the country looks to exit recession.
